The Government of Pakistan has announced the formation of a special medical board to assess the health of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and facilitate his transfer to a hospital for advanced treatment.

Reports of Khan’s deteriorating health, particularly a severe loss of vision in his right eye, have reignited political tensions in the country. The opposition coalition Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Aain-e-Pakistan (TTAP) has been staging continuous sit-in protests outside the Parliament House. In response, the government decided to establish a medical board to examine his condition.

Officials revealed that Khan’s right eye has reportedly lost nearly 85% of vision, prompting the urgent hospital transfer. Information Minister Ataullah Tarar stated on social media platform X that a team of ophthalmologists will conduct a detailed examination, and a full report will be submitted to the Supreme Court.

The government emphasized that all proceedings are under judicial supervision and urged all parties not to politicize the matter. Following a long hiatus, the Supreme Court allowed Khan a 20-minute phone call with his children. However, his sister Alima Khanum warned that delays in specialized treatment have caused irreversible damage to his eye and demanded his immediate transfer to Shifa International Hospital. PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Rajao also urged his immediate transfer to a specialized private hospital.

Since Friday, opposition leaders have been staging continuous protests outside Parliament after Friday prayers, led by Senate opposition leader Allama Raja Nasir AbbasMahmood Khan Achakzai, and PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan.

To control the protests, a large number of police have been deployed in Islamabad’s Red Zone. Road closures across the capital have caused severe traffic congestion and public inconvenience. Political analysts say Imran Khan’s health issue has now become a major challenge for the government.
