Cesar Gastelum, a popular Mexican social media influencer, was shot and killed by gunmen while broadcasting live on TikTok. The incident occurred on Tuesday (4 August) outside a fast-food restaurant in the northwestern city of Culiacan while he was hanging out with friends.
Gastelum, a comedy content creator with nearly 600,000 TikTok followers, was targeted by two helmeted assailants who arrived on a motorcycle, according to eyewitnesses and a verified livestream video reviewed by Reuters. Security officials in Sinaloa state confirmed his death and stated that a massive manhunt is underway to apprehend the culprits. Culiacan has long been a stronghold for rival organized crime syndicates and drug cartel turf wars.
This assassination has drawn parallel to another tragic incident from last year. In May 2025, beauty influencer Valeria Marquez, 23, was shot dead by an intruder while live-streaming inside her beauty salon in Zapopan, Jalisco. Investigated as a femicide, authorities announced the arrest of cartel figure Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala, alias "El R-1," in July of this year in connection with Marquez's murder and other high-profile crimes. Analysts note that these targeted attacks on digital creators highlight deepening security concerns across various regions of Mexico.
