NEWS DESKAt least nine mosques across several Dutch cities have received threatening letters containing Islamophobic remarks and derogatory cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), sparking deep concern among the Muslim community.
Local media reported that mosques in Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Arnhem, Tilburg, and The Hague were among those targeted. The letters, written in a substance resembling blood, contained inflammatory comments as well as offensive caricatures of the Prophet, which are strictly forbidden in Islam.
Imams and mosque authorities stated that the messages were filled with hate speech and incitement to violence. Local Muslim leaders believe the intent behind the letters was to provoke and insult religious sentiments.
Joram van Klaveren, spokesperson for the Dutch national mosque organization K9, told broadcaster NOS, “This is clearly an intimidation tactic. One of the letters received in Rotterdam even read, ‘The final days of Islam in Europe are approaching.’ These messages are not only full of hate but also carry threats.”
Van Klaveren added that the incident has revived memories of past tragedies, including the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks in New Zealand, which killed 51 worshippers, and the recent murder of a Muslim man during prayer in France earlier this year.
Mosque committees have already contacted local authorities. A meeting has been held with Rotterdam Mayor Carola Schouten, and officials have assured that the matter is being taken seriously and is under thorough review.
