During a four-day state visit to the United States, King Charles III and Queen Camilla were given a tour of beehives at the White House by US President Donald Trump.
The visit, which began after the royal couple landed at Joint Base Andrews on Monday, included formal welcomes by diplomatic and government officials.
According to a report by CNN, the beekeeping display was part of a symbolic and informal moment during the otherwise highly structured state visit.
King Charles is known for his long-standing interest in beekeeping. His official residence, Buckingham Palace, has multiple beehives, and honey produced there is reportedly used at the royal household.
Historical notes referenced during the visit mentioned that the late Queen Elizabeth II once gifted Buckingham Palace honey to the late Pope Francis.
The White House also maintains its own beehives, initiated during the tenure of former First Lady Michelle Obama in 2009. The current setup reportedly includes tens of thousands of bees during peak summer months and produces hundreds of pounds of honey annually.
First Lady Melania Trump recently inaugurated a new hive structure on the South Lawn ahead of the royal visit. The design was reportedly created to resemble a miniature version of the White House.
The new addition includes two additional bee colonies, expanding the existing system and increasing honey production capacity.
During the visit, King Charles and Queen Camilla toured the beekeeping area after a tea reception at the White House. Observers noted that the inclusion of such informal cultural elements highlights the detailed planning involved in high-level state visits.
Analysts say the moment reflects a softer diplomatic approach alongside formal discussions, emphasizing shared interests and personal diplomacy between leaders.
