Authorities in California’s Orange County have raised alarm over a tank containing toxic chemicals at a chemical plant that could potentially rupture or explode at any time. In response to the growing threat, California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency.
Officials said the tank contains nearly 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable chemical commonly used in plastic manufacturing. Rising heat and pressure inside the tank have increased concerns about a possible explosion.
As a precautionary measure, thousands of residents in the Garden Grove area have been ordered to evacuate to safer locations. Local schools have been closed, and several major roads have been temporarily shut down.
The factory is operated by GKN Aerospace, a manufacturer of aircraft and spacecraft components. The facility is located about five miles from Disneyland Resort. However, authorities said the theme park remains outside the danger zone and has stayed open.
Orange County health officer Regina Chinsio-Kwong urged residents to immediately report any unusual chemical odor.
“Smelling the chemical does not necessarily mean it has reached harmful levels, but we do not want anyone exposed to it,” she said.
According to health officials, inhaling the chemical vapor could cause breathing difficulties, eye irritation, and dizziness.
Orange County Fire Authority official Craig Covi said temperatures inside the tank are rising rapidly. Emergency crews are spraying water on the tank to cool it down and setting up containment systems in case the chemical leaks.
A spokesperson for GKN Aerospace apologized to local residents and said the situation remains unstable. The company added that it is continuing to work closely with emergency responders, hazardous materials teams, and local authorities to ensure the safety of residents, employees, and everyone involved.
