U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (Islamabad MOU), marking what both sides describe as an initial step toward a broader and more permanent agreement aimed at ending hostilities between the two countries.

President Trump signed the memorandum at the historic Palace of Versailles near Paris while attending events related to the G7 Summit in France. Speaking to reporters after the signing ceremony, Trump confirmed the development, saying, “It has been signed. I just signed it at Versailles.”

The signing reportedly took place ahead of an official dinner attended by French President Emmanuel Macron.

On the same day, President Pezeshkian signed the memorandum at his office in Tehran. Iranian state news agency Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reportedly published photographs of the signing ceremony.

Although relatively brief, the 14-point memorandum is being viewed as a significant diplomatic breakthrough. Consisting of approximately 800 words, the document is intended to reduce long-standing tensions between Washington and Tehran and establish a framework for future negotiations.

Diplomatic observers say the agreement could serve as the foundation for a comprehensive and lasting peace accord if successfully implemented.

The initiative follows years of disputes over Iran’s nuclear program, periods of military confrontation, and efforts to maintain ceasefires and diplomatic engagement. Pakistan, acting as a mediator, is reported to have played a key role in facilitating communication between the two sides.

According to reports, Washington sent a draft agreement to Tehran through Pakistani channels in early May. On May 6, a White House official indicated that the United States had submitted a proposal and remained optimistic that both countries could reach a mutually acceptable solution.

Analysts suggest that progress in implementing the Islamabad MOU could have far-reaching implications not only for U.S.-Iran relations but also for the broader geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.
