The U.S. Supreme Court is set to issue a ruling on Tuesday on President Donald Trump's executive order seeking to limit birthright citizenship, a key component of his administration's immigration agenda.
The executive order, signed shortly after Trump began his second term in office, aims to restrict automatic U.S. citizenship for certain children born in the United States.
Under the order, children born in the U.S. would not be recognized as American citizens if neither parent is a U.S. citizen nor a lawful permanent resident (green card holder).
A lower federal court previously blocked the order, with challengers arguing that it violates the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which states that all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to its jurisdiction, are U.S. citizens.
The Supreme Court's decision is expected to determine the future of one of the Trump administration's most controversial immigration measures.
When the executive order was announced last year, critics accused the Republican president of pursuing immigration policies that disproportionately affect immigrant communities and raised concerns about potential discrimination.
Legal experts have warned that, if implemented, the policy could affect the legal status of approximately 250,000 children born in the United States each year. They also cautioned that hundreds of thousands of families could face significant legal and administrative challenges in establishing their children's citizenship status.
The ruling is expected to have far-reaching implications for U.S. immigration policy and the constitutional interpretation of birthright citizenship.
