The U.S. State Department has approved a potential sale of precision-guided rocket systems and related military equipment to Saudi Arabia, with an estimated value of approximately $1.96 billion.
In a statement, the State Department said the proposed sale has received initial approval under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. The package includes advanced precision-guided weapons and a range of supporting military equipment and services.
According to the statement, the Saudi government has requested the purchase of 10,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) air-to-air guidance sections and 10,000 APKWS II air-to-ground guidance sections.
The proposed deal also includes a variety of related military hardware, including LAU-131A/A launchers, MK-152 high-explosive warheads, MK66 rocket motors, proximity fuzes, WTU-1/B practice warheads, and inert MK66 rocket motors.
In addition to the weapons systems, the package covers test support equipment, launch and employment equipment, spare parts, repair equipment, technical publications and documentation, personnel training, and training equipment.
The agreement also includes engineering, technical, logistics, and program support services to be provided by the U.S. government and defense contractors.
The State Department said the proposed sale is part of the Foreign Military Sales process and is subject to the relevant approval procedures before it can be finalized.
