The United States Congress has passed a strict sanctions and tariff bill aimed at intensifying economic pressure on Russia over the war in Ukraine, paving the way for levies of up to 100 percent on countries importing Russian oil and gas.
The legislation, titled the "Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026," cleared the House of Representatives with a 262-150 vote on Wednesday and will soon become law upon President Donald Trump's signature. The bill targets Russia's energy sector, defense network, and the "shadow fleet" used to evade existing restrictions. As one of the world's largest importers of crude oil and a leading buyer of discounted Russian energy, India faces significant strategic and economic risks under the new provisions.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that it is closely monitoring the developments, emphasizing New Delhi's firm commitment to safeguarding its energy security and protecting its commercial interests. While certain European nations have been granted exemptions due to gradual phase-out measures, major Asian buyers like India lack such relief, raising serious concerns over future bilateral trade dynamics and energy procurement strategies.
