A historic new chapter has opened in American electoral politics as Democratic candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms has won the Georgia gubernatorial election, becoming the first Black woman ever elected governor in the United States.

Bottoms defeated her Republican rival, Rick Jackson, in Tuesday's election, marking a landmark achievement in the country's political history. Her victory also restores Democratic control of the governor's office in Georgia.

Bottoms is an experienced political leader with a substantial record in public service. Before being elected governor of Georgia, she served as the 60th mayor of Atlanta, the state's capital, from 2018 to 2022.

After completing her mayoral tenure, she joined the Biden administration as a senior White House adviser and Director of the Office of Public Engagement, where she played a role in national politics.

A lawyer by profession, Bottoms earned her bachelor's degree in journalism from Florida A&M University and a law degree from Georgia State University.

Her victory is being viewed as a major milestone in American politics. Throughout the history of the country's 50 states, no Black woman had previously been elected to the position of governor.

The election result marks a significant moment for Black women's political representation and opens a new chapter in the history of leadership at the highest levels of American state government.
