Democratic Representative Marcy Kaptur has been re-elected in Ohio's highly competitive 9th Congressional District, defeating Republican candidate Derek Merrin in Tuesday's election.

The 80-year-old lawmaker secured her 23rd term in the US Congress, according to a report by Fox News.

The outcome of the race could have significant implications for the broader battle for control of the House of Representatives.

Despite the redrawing of the district boundaries in a way that was considered favourable to Republicans, Kaptur managed to retain her seat.

Kaptur and Merrin also faced each other in the 2024 election, when the incumbent Democrat won by a margin of fewer than 2,400 votes.

First elected to Congress in 1982, Kaptur holds the distinction of being the longest-serving woman in the history of the US Congress.
