After nearly two decades, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is set to return to state power. Securing an absolute majority in the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the party is preparing to form the government for the fourth time. The outcome signals a significant shift in the country’s political landscape, with party chairman Tarique Rahman poised to assume the role of Prime Minister for

According to the Election Commission’s final results, the party’s electoral symbol, the “Sheaf of Paddy,” received overwhelming nationwide support. Observers describe this as BNP’s most substantial victory since the 1991 and 2001 elections. Political analysts suggest that 17 years of sustained and coordinated opposition against the ruling Bangladesh Awami League culminated in this electoral mandate. The ballot appears to reflect a clear public desire for change.

The party faced a profound loss on December 30 with the passing of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. However, Tarique Rahman managed to consolidate party unity during a period of mourning and transition.

After spending 17 years abroad, Rahman returned to Bangladesh on December 25, energizing grassroots leaders and activists. Contesting from Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6, he secured decisive victories, reinforcing his political legitimacy.

Rahman’s political journey began in 1988 at the grassroots level in Gabtoli, Bogura. He later served as Senior Joint Secretary General in 2002 and took charge during challenging times as Acting Chairman. Elected Senior Vice Chairman in 2009, he emphasized modernization and technological integration within the party structure. Following Khaleda Zia’s death, he formally assumed the role of Chairman and led the party to its recent electoral triumph.

With the reins of government returning to BNP after 20 years, analysts believe Rahman’s leadership will now be tested in shaping a modern and inclusive Bangladesh. Drawing on his long political struggle, exile experience, and organizational base, the nation watches closely as a new chapter in leadership begins.
