Newly appointed Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has pledged that all constitutional, government and private institutions in Bangladesh will operate strictly under established laws and regulations, free from partisan or political influence.
In his first address to the nation as prime minister, delivered Tuesday night and broadcast on Bangladesh Television, Rahman said the rule of law would be the guiding principle of his administration.
He outlined key priorities for the newly formed government, including stabilizing the economy, improving law and order, controlling commodity prices, reforming market management, strengthening governance, upgrading transport and rail connectivity, and cracking down on gambling, drugs and traffic congestion.
Rahman said the new government belongs equally to all citizens—whether they voted for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), voted for another party, or did not vote at all.
“The state belongs to everyone, regardless of party, religion or belief,” he said. “As citizens of Bangladesh, each and every one of you has equal rights. This government is for buyers, sellers and recipients alike. You have entrusted us with the responsibility to run the state.”
Commitment to Democracy and Equality
The prime minister said the country had safeguarded its independence and sovereignty through the sacrifices of thousands of martyrs, and that the new government would remain accountable to the people.
Addressing citizens of all faiths—Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians—and those living in both hill tracts and plains, Rahman emphasized inclusivity and national unity.
“We want to build a safe, self-reliant, humane and democratic Bangladesh for every citizen,” he said.
Economy and Law Enforcement
Rahman acknowledged that his government has taken office amid what he described as a fragile economy, weakened governance structures and a deteriorating law and order situation stemming from corruption and mismanagement during what he termed a period of “fascism.”
Improving public security and strictly curbing corruption are among the government’s top priorities, he said. The administration has identified the spread of gambling and drug abuse nationwide as key contributors to law and order deterioration, and law enforcement agencies have been instructed to take firm action.
Market Stability Ahead of Ramadan
Addressing business leaders, Rahman said the government seeks to protect both traders and consumers.
With the holy month of Ramadan approaching, he urged businesses to ensure that essential commodity prices remain within reach of ordinary citizens. He reiterated the government’s commitment to dismantling illegal syndicates involved in market manipulation.
He also said authorities have been instructed to ensure uninterrupted gas, water and electricity supply during key times in Ramadan, particularly for iftar, tarawih and sahri.
Tackling Traffic and Transport Reform
Rahman described traffic congestion—especially in the capital, Dhaka—as nearly unmanageable and a major cause of public suffering. He stressed the need to reduce population pressure in the capital and enable people to work and conduct business efficiently from their home districts.
To that end, he announced plans to modernize and overhaul the country’s rail communication system to improve nationwide connectivity.
Austerity Measures and Ethical Governance
The prime minister said he wants to set an example of austerity before calling on citizens to do the same. At the first meeting of the BNP parliamentary party, it was decided that no BNP lawmaker would import tax-free vehicles or accept government plot allocations.
Rahman said these decisions reflect the Islamic principle of justice and fairness, which he had previously pledged to uphold if given the opportunity to lead the country.
“Our decisions are a reflection of that commitment to justice,” he said.
