Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Leader of the Opposition in the National Parliament, has said that constitutional reform is necessary to preserve the true spirit of democracy.

Speaking at an Eid-ul-Fitr gathering with journalists at the Sylhet Circuit House in Sylhet, he emphasized that no constitution in the world is unchangeable. According to him, amendments can and should be made in response to the evolving needs of society and the state.

Addressing potential post-election challenges, Rahman noted that if issues cannot be resolved within parliament, they may naturally lead to movements outside it. He stressed that his party believes in rational and constructive politics.

“We are liberal, but not blind,” he said, adding that they do not support accepting anything without question. He stated that when the people express a clear mandate for change and reform, it becomes the government’s responsibility to implement those reforms.

Rahman also highlighted accountability, saying that political leaders must answer to the জনগণ for the responsibilities entrusted to them. He added that if the government meets public expectations, it should be allowed to complete its five-year mandate. However, if it fails to demonstrate capability, the final decision should rest with the people.
