A community awareness meeting has been held with local imams to highlight the safety measures, environmental protection systems and potential socioeconomic benefits of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
The meeting discussed nuclear power generation, modern safety technologies, radiation control and monitoring, environmental protection and the project's contribution to local and national development.
Titled ‘Community Leader Roundtable’, the event was held on Thursday afternoon at the Nuclear Information Centre in Ishwardi.
It was organised jointly by the Islamic Foundation, Pabna, and the Nuclear Information Centre, Ishwardi. Imams from Pakshi and Sahapur unions of Ishwardi upazila attended the programme.
The information was disclosed in a press release signed by Saikat Ahmed, senior scientific information officer of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Construction Project.
Dr Md. Zahedul Hassan, managing director of Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), attended the event as the chief guest.
The programme was chaired by Dr Md. Kabir Hossain, project director of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Construction Project.

Officials highlight safety and energy security
Addressing the meeting, Dr Zahedul Hassan said the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant would play an important role in meeting Bangladesh's growing electricity demand and ensuring long-term energy security.
The plant is designed to generate a total of 2,400 megawatts of electricity through its two units.
He highlighted the importance of modern technology, multiple layers of safety systems and regular monitoring to ensure safe operation and environmental protection.
Imams urged to counter misinformation
In his presidential address, Project Director Dr Kabir Hossain said imams were respected and trusted figures in local communities and could play an important role in spreading accurate, science-based information about the nuclear power project.
He said their social influence could help dispel misconceptions, increase public awareness and strengthen understanding of nuclear energy.
Active participation by imams in such initiatives would also help build stronger communication and mutual trust between the project authorities and local communities, he added.
Experts answer questions from religious leaders
During the interactive session, participating imams raised questions and shared their views on nuclear electricity generation, plant safety, radiation exposure, environmental protection and the project's potential benefits for local residents.
Relevant experts and officials responded to their queries and provided explanations and technical information.
The organisers expressed hope that direct engagement with influential religious and community leaders would help disseminate accurate information about the peaceful and safe use of nuclear energy.
They also expected the initiative to strengthen public awareness, positive perceptions and confidence among people living near the facility.
First unit in power start-up phase
Meanwhile, activities under the power start-up phase of the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant are currently underway.
The authorities hope that electricity can be supplied to the national grid soon, provided all activities progress according to plan.
