Belgium’s Defence Minister, Theo Francken, has issued a direct warning to Russia, stating that any missile attack on Brussels would provoke a strong NATO response and that Moscow could be “wiped off the map.”

According to a report by TRT World on Tuesday, Francken made the comments during an interview with De Morgen newspaper on Monday.

He said, “If President Putin launches a missile toward Brussels, we will wipe Moscow off the map.”

Francken emphasised the importance of NATO’s “collective defence commitment” and dismissed European doubts about the United States’ commitment to the alliance.

“There is incredible bias against the American government in Europe… but the US will continue to fully support its NATO allies. A cruise missile toward Brussels? It will receive a response without question. Call it whatever you like — Putin won’t risk it either,” he said.

However, Francken also cautioned against underestimating Russia’s military capabilities.

He noted, “The Russians have increased their military capacity. Their war economy produces four times more ammunition than all NATO countries combined. Europe does not have a central command.”

He added that in Ukraine, Russia is essentially fighting the entire West. “The Ukrainians are using our weapons, ammunition, and money to fight. Otherwise, they would have been defeated long ago,” Francken said.

Looking ahead, Francken warned that China seeks to prolong the conflict, saying, “It weakens the West. They buy vast amounts of Russian raw materials, supply weapons, and are fully satisfied with Putin deploying North Korean troops.”

The Belgian defence minister also expressed confidence that a large-scale Russian attack on the Baltic states is unlikely because they are NATO members.

He further noted, “Soon we will have 600 F-35 fighter jets in Europe. The Russians fear them because they are invisible to radar.”
