Bangladesh has witnessed rising tensions following the death of Sharif Osman bin Hadir, spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha and a prominent figure of the July uprising. Protests erupted across several parts of the country on Wednesday, with incidents including demonstrations, arson attacks on media offices, and slogans against what protesters described as Indian dominance.

Expressing deep concern over the developments, Indian National Congress MP and Chairperson of India’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, Shashi Tharoor, warned that the ongoing violence is limiting India’s ability to assist ordinary citizens of Bangladesh.

Referring to a well-known statement by former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Tharoor said, “Geography cannot be changed. We will remain where we are, and they will remain where they are. They must learn to work with us in harmony.”

Tharoor highlighted that attacks on media outlets and escalating unrest have already forced India to shut down two of its visa centers in Bangladesh. “This is extremely disappointing,” he said, adding that Bangladeshi citizens who wish to travel to India are now facing difficulties in obtaining visas, which were previously issued more easily.

He noted that the current situation has made it increasingly difficult for the Indian government to extend support to ordinary Bangladeshis.

Emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations, Tharoor urged the Bangladeshi government to prioritize peaceful ties with India. “I hope the situation returns to normal soon. I appeal to the people and the government of Bangladesh to understand the importance of close relations with their neighbor,” he said, once again recalling Vajpayee’s remarks on the unchangeable realities of geography.

Tharoor also stated that New Delhi is closely monitoring the situation. He said Indian officials stationed in Dhaka would engage directly with Bangladeshi authorities. “The Indian High Commission in Dhaka will remain in contact with the government and request all necessary steps to help calm the situation,” he added.
