Iran could reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz as early as Thursday or Friday, once a ceasefire framework is finalized ahead of a scheduled meeting with the United States in Pakistan, according to a senior Iranian official.

During the recent conflict, Iran’s closure of the strait caused significant disruption in global oil and gas markets. As part of the ceasefire agreement with Washington, Tehran has agreed to allow the safe passage of commercial vessels through the vital waterway.

The official added that the reopening will be coordinated with Iran’s military forces to ensure security. Since the outbreak of hostilities, the strait has been effectively closed, with maritime monitoring data indicating that only 5% of the pre-war traffic is currently able to pass through.

Some tankers have managed to navigate the strait under separate arrangements. Pakistan and India, for instance, have negotiated specific agreements with Iran to ensure safe passage for vessels flying their flags.

Starting today, ships will be allowed to transit the strait under certain conditions, with transit fees imposed by Iran and supported by Oman. Reports suggest that Iran is charging up to $2 million per vessel, although it remains unclear whether any shipowners have paid the fee so far.
