Iran has indicated that China could emerge as a powerful mediator in easing ongoing tensions between Tehran and the United States.

The remarks were made by Iran’s ambassador to China, Rahmani Fazli, in an interview with the state news agency Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

Fazli said Beijing could play an important role in reducing tensions between Tehran and Washington, but stressed that such mediation should not be used as a tool to pressure Iran.

His comments came ahead of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s visit to Beijing and shortly before a planned visit by US President Donald Trump to China.

According to White House sources, no major final decisions regarding the Middle East situation are expected before Trump’s China visit.

Rahmani Fazli emphasized that China is not only an economic partner for Iran but also an essential part of Tehran’s “political balance” against external threats.

He further stated that following recent tensions involving the United States and Israel, Iran does not want to limit itself solely to military or strategic responses. Instead, Tehran is actively trying to reshape its diplomatic position.

According to Fazli, Araghchi’s Beijing visit is part of that broader strategy. He claimed that China views the crisis not as an opportunity to pressure Iran, but rather as an issue of conflict management and preventing the collapse of regional security.

Addressing the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, Fazli said Iran’s security measures there are purely defensive and not intended to disrupt international trade.

Meanwhile, ahead of President Trump’s expected Beijing trip, the United States Department of the Treasury imposed new sanctions on 12 individuals and entities accused of assisting Iranian oil sales.

Amid these parallel developments, the prospect of Beijing acting as a mediator between Tehran and Washington has become a major topic of international discussion.
