At least five people, including two gunmen, were killed in a shooting at the largest mosque and Islamic education complex in San Diego, California, authorities said.
One of the suspects has been identified as a 17-year-old high school wrestler described by classmates and relatives as a “good boy,” leaving many shocked and struggling to understand his alleged involvement in the deadly attack.
According to CNN, the suspect was identified through law enforcement sources and police dispatch records as Kane Clark, a homeschooled student enrolled in an online education program.
James Canning, spokesperson for the San Diego Unified School District, said Clark previously attended Kate Sessions Elementary School and the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts before joining the iHigh Virtual Academy in 2021.
Although enrolled in virtual learning, Clark participated in sports and school activities at Madison High School, his designated local school. He was a member of the school’s wrestling team during the 2024–2025 academic year. In January 2024, the wrestling team publicly congratulated him on Instagram after he won first place in a tournament.
Canning said Clark appeared to be on track for graduation and had no major disciplinary history aside from a minor incident in elementary school in 2015.
Family members said they were stunned by the allegations. Clark’s grandparents, David and Deborah Clark, said they were trying to understand what had happened and expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
A former wrestling teammate, speaking anonymously, described Clark as a homeschooled student who tried to make friends and fit in with the team.
“He seemed like a good kid,” the teammate said. “I never thought he was capable of something like this.”
The teammate also said he had never heard Clark make Islamophobic or racist remarks and had never seen him behave violently.
Meanwhile, San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said another teenage suspect involved in the attack allegedly took three firearms and a vehicle from his mother’s home before carrying out the shooting at the Islamic center.
According to investigators, the suspect’s mother contacted police after discovering that both her son and her vehicle were missing, along with several firearms from the house.
Wahl said the alarming information prompted authorities to launch “a much broader threat assessment” while searching for the teenager.
