A new controversy has erupted in the United States over what passengers should wear at airports. After Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently urged travelers to dress “respectfully and appropriately,” many Americans have pushed back—showing up to airports in pajamas as a form of protest.
The UK-based Independent reported on Friday that the Trump administration launched a campaign last November titled “The Golden Age of Travel Starts With You.” The initiative aims to restore civility, courtesy, and order to air travel.
At a press conference, Duffy said, “Jeans and a clean shirt are enough. But let’s at least not come to the airport wearing slippers and pajamas.” He claimed that dressing well makes people behave more politely.
However, many critics say Duffy’s comments crossed a line. Social media platforms—especially TikTok and X—have seen strong backlash.
Democratic activist Johnny Palmadessa, appearing in a video while wearing pajamas, said, “This administration’s priorities are completely misplaced.” He argued that Trump and Duffy should instead focus on reducing airfare and travel costs so that people can afford nicer clothing.
Another TikToker posted a video of herself heading to the airport in pajamas, writing, “Since they told us not to, I’m definitely wearing pajamas now!”
Despite the growing debate, the Department of Transportation has not issued any formal comment on the matter.
Supporters of the new campaign point to rising incidents of passenger misconduct. The department notes that since 2019, nearly 14,000 cases of disorderly behavior have been recorded—a 400% increase compared to previous years.
