A nationwide strike has been announced across the United States for next Friday to protest alleged brutality by immigration authorities and to demand the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The call for the strike was issued on social media by an activist network known as the National Shutdown Campaign. According to the announcement, schools will remain closed, businesses will shut down, and workers are being urged not to report to their jobs. The organizers have declared that the sole slogan of the strike will be “No More ICE.”

Public anger has intensified following the deaths of Nicole Good and Alex Prettit, who were fatally shot by law enforcement officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Since January 26, protests and strike actions have been taking place daily in the city.

Over the past four days, large-scale demonstrations have also been held in more than fifty cities, including New York, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Boston, despite severe weather conditions.

The current wave of unrest has drawn comparisons to the nationwide protests that erupted after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020. However, unlike that period, no nationwide strike had been declared at the time.

Meanwhile, Tricia McLellan, spokesperson and deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, rejected the allegations against ICE, stating that the claims are inaccurate. She said that attacks and disinformation campaigns targeting ICE have increased by 1,300 times in recent months.

It is worth noting that ICE has long faced accusations of human rights violations and abuse in the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.
