President Donald Trump has officially nominated former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh as the 17th Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Trump announced the decision on his social media platform Friday morning, as Jerome Powell's term nears its end. Praising Warsh as a highly skilled and long-time colleague, Trump expressed confidence that he would become one of the greatest Fed chairs in American history.
The 55-year-old nominee currently serves as a visiting fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. Warsh previously made history in 2006 as the youngest governor ever appointed to the Federal Reserve at age 35. Having served as a White House economist under George W. Bush, he played a pivotal role in navigating the global financial crisis. He is expected to succeed Jerome Powell, whose term expires this coming May.
The nomination has sparked mixed reactions within political and economic circles. While Warsh’s recent support for lower interest rates aligns with Trump’s economic vision, critics point to his past inaccurate inflation forecasts during the 2009 recession. Warsh now faces a confirmation hearing before the Senate Banking Committee, where he is likely to be questioned regarding the central bank’s independence from executive pressure.
