Tensions across the Middle East continue to escalate amid repeated threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump of a potential large-scale attack on Iran. Israel has also pushed for a change in Iran’s governing system with U.S. backing, while Tehran has warned it is fully prepared to defend the country and has declared that any attack would be treated as an act of war.
Against this backdrop, U.S.-based outlet Drop Site News published a report describing what it called highly sensitive developments. Citing multiple sources, the report said senior U.S. military officials have informed leaders of key American allies in the Middle East that Trump could approve a military strike against Iran as early as this weekend.
According to the report, U.S. officials told allied governments that American strikes on Iran could begin as early as Sunday.
A former senior U.S. intelligence official told Drop Site News that the planned operation is not primarily focused on Iran’s nuclear or missile programs, but rather on achieving regime change. The official, who currently advises Arab governments and serves as an informal Middle East adviser to the Trump administration, said the objective is the removal of Iran’s ruling leadership.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the former intelligence official said the plans include attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, ballistic missile sites, and other military infrastructure. He added that the operation also aims at what he described as the “decapitation” of the Iranian government, with a particular focus on dismantling the leadership and capabilities of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
According to sources cited in the report, the Trump administration believes that successful strikes against Iran’s top leadership would trigger mass protests by ordinary Iranians, ultimately leading to the collapse of the government.
The former intelligence official said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed strong support for military action against Iran. Netanyahu has reportedly assured Trump that Israel would help facilitate the establishment of a new government in Tehran and that such a government would be friendly toward Western countries.
Two senior Arab intelligence officials told Drop Site News that they have received information suggesting a U.S. attack on Iran could begin “at any moment.”
