Two additional suspects have been arrested in connection with an alleged plot to attack a UFC event held at the White House, according to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Federal authorities allege that the suspects were part of a multi-state conspiracy involving the use of explosive-laden drones to target the event and create mass panic and chaos.
In a statement, the U.S. Department of Justice said the defendants have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, an offense that carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment if convicted.
Investigators said the alleged plot targeted the “UFC Freedom 250” event held on June 14. According to the allegations, U.S. President Donald Trump was present at the gathering on the White House South Lawn. Prosecutors claim the suspects planned to use drones carrying explosives to trigger panic among attendees and then carry out further attacks by opening fire on the crowd.
According to the FBI, one of the suspects allegedly served as a drone operator and discussed strategies for maximizing the impact of a drone-based attack. Another suspect is accused of providing financial support, arranging travel logistics, and assisting in the acquisition of military-style equipment. Investigators reportedly recovered a 3D printer and other materials from the individual’s residence that could potentially be used to manufacture drone components.
Authorities said the investigation began after the parents of a co-defendant in Ohio alerted law enforcement to their child’s suspicious online activities and firearms-related purchases.
The FBI stated that swift action by investigators helped prevent what could have been a major attack.
U.S. media reports have indicated that as many as 23 individuals may have been connected to the alleged network. Authorities say efforts to identify and apprehend any remaining suspects are ongoing.
