The United States is preparing to deploy nearly 1,000 troops near Iran’s border to strengthen its military presence in the Middle East, even as it continues diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions with Tehran.
According to sources, around 1,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division are expected to arrive in the region within the next few days. The deployment may include Division Commander Brandon Tegtmeier, staff members, and a battalion from the division’s 1st Brigade.
A U.S. military source said part of the division could begin its deployment within a week, with additional personnel from the same brigade to follow later. However, the plans may change depending on the evolving situation.
The battalion is currently serving as a rapid response force, capable of launching operations within hours of receiving orders. It is expected to remain in the Middle East as a ready unit, although a formal deployment order has not yet been issued. Officials suggest such an order could come soon.
A similar move was made in 2020 following the killing of Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said that progress has been made in talks with Iran, claiming that agreements have been reached on 15 issues and that Tehran has shown interest in a deal.
Although Iran initially denied any negotiations, a source later indicated that communication between the two sides has taken place and that Tehran is open to hearing a “sustainable proposal.”
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, Washington is simultaneously reinforcing its military presence in the region. Two naval and Marine units—each consisting of around 4,500 personnel—have already been deployed to the Middle East.
These units are equipped with air support and logistical capabilities, enabling rapid military action if necessary.
