A historic night of celebration turned into widespread mayhem and violence in midtown Manhattan as tens of thousands of fans flooded the streets to celebrate the New York Knicks' first NBA championship in 53 years.
The initial euphoria quickly devolved into a riotous standoff with law enforcement, prompting riot police to intervene and arrest 63 individuals. The bedlam on Broadway was punctuated by gunfire in Times Square, sending hundreds of panicked pedestrians stampeding for cover in the early hours of Sunday.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the shooting occurred around 2 a.m. near 42nd Street and Broadway, leaving a 17-year-old male with a gunshot wound to his left foot. Due to the impenetrable density of the rowdy crowds, arriving ambulances were completely blocked, forcing officers to transport the bleeding teenager to a local hospital in a police cruiser. Additionally, authorities confirmed that four individuals were stabbed or slashed during localized brawls, and at least ten NYPD officers sustained injuries from projectiles and physical assaults.
Bystander footage and surveillance videos captured the sheer scale of the destruction, showing individuals armed with baseball bats smashing the windshields of five police cruisers. The vandalism escalated rapidly as rioters scaled scaffolding, light poles, and transit structures before setting fire to five yellow school buses, one of which was completely engulfed in flames. Notably, these buses had been chartered to transport international spectators for upcoming FIFA World Cup matches. Officers recovered a loaded firearm at the scene and took three persons of interest into custody in connection with the shooting.
The 63 rioters currently face a litany of charges, including assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct. The Knicks' historic victory over the San Antonio Spurs marks their first league title since 1973, an achievement New York City plans to officially honor this Thursday with a ticker-tape parade through the Canyon of Heroes. However, following the overnight devastation, City Hall and the NYPD have promised a massive, unprecedented security deployment to prevent further civil unrest during the upcoming civic ceremonies.
