In an unprecedented show of public discontent with President Donald Trump’s policies and leadership, US voters have handed the Democratic Party a sweeping victory in the closely watched midterm elections.
In a major political upset, Democrats have secured control of both chambers of Congress—the Senate and the House of Representatives—dealing a significant blow to the Republican Party and the Trump administration.
According to the post-election results, Democrats have won 54 of the Senate’s 100 seats, compared with 44 for Republicans, while the results for two seats remain outstanding.
Under the US electoral system, roughly one-third of Senate seats are contested every two years. Accordingly, 35 Senate seats were up for grabs in this year's midterm elections.
Before the election, Republicans held 53 seats, while Democrats controlled 45. Two additional seats were held by independent senators who caucused with the Democrats. In the latest election, Democratic candidates defeated Republicans in seven previously Republican-held Senate seats.
Democrats have also secured a commanding lead in the House of Representatives. So far, they have won 231 seats, while Republicans have secured 139. The results for 65 seats are yet to be declared.
All 435 seats in the House were contested in the midterm elections.
A party needs at least 51 seats in the Senate and 218 seats in the House to secure a majority. With their latest gains, Democrats have secured control of both chambers.
According to the Associated Press, Democrats have captured at least seven Senate seats previously held by Republicans, making significant inroads into traditionally Republican strongholds.
The Democrats also made major gains in gubernatorial races, winning in four states—Georgia, Texas, Ohio and Iowa—where Republicans had held power for an extended period. The victories mark a significant shift in the political landscape of those states.
In the House elections, Democrats wrested several key seats from Republicans, including in districts where Donald Trump had secured substantial victories in the 2024 presidential election.
Democratic candidates made notable gains in Indiana, Iowa, New Jersey, North Carolina and Texas, defeating Republican incumbents in multiple districts.
One of the most significant victories came in Indiana's 5th Congressional District, where Democrat J.D. Ford defeated Republican Congresswoman Victoria Spartz.
Notably, Trump had won the district by nearly 17 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election. The Democratic victory in the traditionally Republican-leaning constituency underscores the scale of the political shift reflected in the midterm results.
