Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers in Michigan's Senate race, becoming the first Muslim in US history to be elected to the Senate.

El-Sayed defeated his Republican rival by a margin of more than 200,000 votes. The Egyptian-American politician secured his party's nomination last November.

During the campaign, President Donald Trump and senior Republican allies repeatedly sought to portray El-Sayed's Muslim identity, his position on Israel and his progressive policy agenda as threats to local communities and warned that his policies would increase the cost of living.

However, Michigan voters appeared unconvinced by the Republican campaign, delivering a decisive victory to El-Sayed.

Meanwhile, Democrats have scored a major victory in the US midterm elections, regaining control of the Senate. The result gives the party significant influence over policymaking and key appointments during the remainder of Trump's presidency.

Democrats are also poised to regain control of both chambers of Congress next year, with the party showing strong prospects of securing a majority in the House of Representatives.

If the projected results hold, Democrats will regain full control of Congress for the first time since 2022, potentially posing a major political challenge to the Trump administration.
