NEWS DESKBangladesh’s first nuclear power facility — the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant — has reached a critical milestone in its journey toward electricity production. The commissioning of both the main and auxiliary transformers for the first unit has been completed, paving the way for the plant's integration into the national power grid.
In a press release issued on June 28, Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom announced that the commissioning of auxiliary transformers—needed to supply electricity to all internal systems of the first unit—has also been successfully completed. These dual-mode transformers are capable of receiving power from both the national grid and the plant's own generator.
Previously, standby transformers were used to power the plant’s internal systems. The newly commissioned dual-mode transformers signify a major leap in operational readiness.
According to the press release, a series of safety-related tests, including the "Hot Media Test," will soon be conducted at the Rooppur site. During some of these tests, unexpected steam release sounds may be heard. However, these are part of routine procedures and have been pre-planned, posing no safety risks to local residents.
Rosatom emphasized that safety remains the highest priority, noting that the project is designed to meet all regulatory safety requirements and adhere to international nuclear standards.
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is being constructed with technical and financial assistance from Russia. The project includes the installation of two Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors, each with a power generation capacity of 1,200 megawatts, making the plant's total output 2,400 megawatts.
Rosatom’s Engineering Division is acting as the general contractor for the entire project, which marks a significant step forward in Bangladesh’s move toward nuclear energy for sustainable electricity generation.
