Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has revealed that the total amount of non-performing loans (NPLs) in the banking sector stood at BDT 5,44,831.88 crore as of December 31, 2025.
The information was provided in response to a parliamentary question by Abul Hasnat on Monday. According to the minister, loans linked to current Members of Parliament and their associated institutions in banks and finance companies amount to BDT 11,117.31 crore. Additionally, BDT 3,330.08 crore was not classified as non-performing due to court directives.
The session, chaired by Deputy Speaker Kaiser Kamal, presented the data during the question-and-answer segment.
Abul Hasnat had sought details on the country’s total non-performing loans, the top 20 defaulters, measures taken by the government for loan recovery, and loans linked to MPs and their affiliated institutions.
According to the Finance Minister, the top 20 defaulting institutions include: S Alam Super Edible Oil Ltd., S Alam Vegetable Oil Ltd., S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Ltd., S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Ltd., Sonali Traders, Bangladesh Export Import Company Ltd. (Beximco), Global Trading Corporation Ltd., Chemon Ispat Ltd., S Alam Trading Company Pvt. Ltd., Infinite CR Strips Industries Ltd., Keya Cosmetics Ltd., Deshbandhu Sugar Mills Ltd., Power Pack Mutiara Keraniganj Power Plant Ltd., Power Pack Mutiara Jamalpur Power Plant Ltd., Pacific Bangladesh Telecom Ltd., Karnaphuli Foods Pvt. Ltd., Murad Enterprise, CLC Power Company, Beximco Communications Ltd., and Rongdhanu Builders Pvt. Ltd.
The minister also highlighted various measures undertaken by the government to recover non-performing loans and strengthen the banking sector.
