Bangladesh is keen to further expand its trade relations with the European Union (EU), one of the country’s most important trading partners, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir said on Tuesday.

He made the remarks during a meeting with European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller at the Commerce Ministry office at the Secretariat in Dhaka.

The meeting focused on bilateral trade, investment opportunities, and the removal of non-tariff barriers between Bangladesh and the EU. Both sides emphasized the importance of creating a more transparent, business-friendly, and simplified trade environment.

The commerce minister said the government is working on policy and institutional reforms to boost exports, attract investment, and facilitate business activities.

Muqtadir also stressed the government’s commitment to reducing non-tariff barriers, simplifying import-export procedures, and addressing practical challenges faced by businesses.

He added that a draft import policy order has already been published on the ministry’s website for public feedback.

The minister said the government is also working to strengthen business confidence and improve Bangladesh’s competitiveness in international trade.

He expressed hope that existing challenges could be resolved through constructive dialogue and joint initiatives with the European Union.

EU Ambassador Michael Miller also expressed interest in deepening trade cooperation with Bangladesh.

He praised the Bangladeshi government’s positive initiatives to improve the business environment and remove existing barriers, but noted that some complex issues would require more comprehensive and sustainable solutions.

The ambassador said the European Union and related business communities are ready to provide support through their experience and feedback.

Additional Commerce Secretary Ayesha Akter and other senior ministry officials were also present at the meeting.
