The Government of Bangladesh has officially issued a gazette notification declaring a year-long observance of “Nazrul Year” in honor of the country's National Poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam.

The notification, issued by the Cabinet Division on Sunday, states that the government has decided to observe Nazrul Year from May 25, 2026, to May 25, 2027. The declaration will take effect from May 25, 2026.

According to the gazette, the initiative aims to commemorate the 127th birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam, whose contributions to Bengali literature, music, and culture continue to inspire generations in Bangladesh and beyond.

Earlier, on May 23, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs organized a national-level celebration in Trishal, Mymensingh, marking the poet's 127th birth anniversary.

During the inaugural ceremony, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced that the period from May 25, 2026, to May 25, 2027, would be observed as “Nazrul Year” across the country.

The publication of the gazette notification formally implements that announcement and paves the way for nationwide cultural, educational, and commemorative programs dedicated to the life, works, and legacy of Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Officials are expected to unveil detailed plans for the year-long observance in the coming months, with events likely to focus on promoting Nazrul’s literary achievements, musical heritage, and contributions to social justice, equality, and humanism.
