NEWS DESKThe Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is "actively working" to bring back ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her niece, British lawmaker Tulip Siddiq, both accused in separate corruption cases. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, ACC Chairman Dr Mohammad Abdul Momen stated that the commission is actively working to ensure both individuals return to face legal proceedings.
Regarding Sheikh Hasina's repatriation, Momen noted, "A prisoner exchange agreement was signed with India during the Awami League government's tenure in 2011. Under that agreement, it is possible to bring her back. We will act in accordance with the court's directives."
Tulip Siddiq was summoned to appear before the ACC at 10:00am today for questioning over allegations of abuse of power and receiving undue privileges. However, she failed to appear. "She has lost the opportunity to defend herself by not showing up," said Momen. "Everyone is given a chance to respond under the rules. If someone fails to appear, we will proceed according to applicable international protocols."
He said, "If we cannot reach her through regular means, or if she is a foreign national or is found to be absconding, then she will be officially considered as such."
"In that case, a red notice will be issued through Interpol and the relevant government will be informed. We will then initiate formal procedures to bring her back," he added.
Earlier, the ACC filed a case against Tulip Siddiq over allegations of acquiring a plot in Purbachal and unlawfully occupying a flat in Gulshan.
