In a bold diplomatic move, Malaysia has officially announced the cancellation of its bilateral trade agreement with the United States.

Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Johari Abdul Ghani stated that the ‘Agreement on Reciprocal Trade’ is now void and lacks any legal standing.

This decision follows a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down the Trump administration's tariff policies, effectively undermining the foundation of the deal signed last October. While major economies like Japan and South Korea continue to navigate U.S. tariffs, Malaysia has become the first nation to formally exit its agreement.

With Malaysian exports to the U.S. totaling approximately 233 billion Ringgit, critical sectors such as electronics, palm oil, and rubber now face significant uncertainty. Minister Johari warned that any future tariffs must be sector-specific and justified, rather than based on overall trade deficits. This move signals a growing shift in international trade dynamics as nations react to Washington's evolving economic policies.
