Amid the ongoing war, debate is intensifying in Iran over whether the country should pursue nuclear weapons. The discussion has reportedly gained momentum following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei early in the conflict, after which hardline factions are said to have increased their influence within the country.

For years, Iran has maintained that it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons. As a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and citing religious principles that prohibit such weapons, Tehran has consistently upheld this position. However, recent attacks by the United States and Israel have triggered renewed internal debate.

According to a report by Reuters, some voices within Iran are now openly questioning whether the country should revise its long-standing policy. The possibility of developing nuclear weapons is being discussed more publicly, and even the idea of withdrawing from the NPT has been raised.

Hardline politician Mohammad Javad Larijani has expressed support for exiting the treaty. Analysts suggest that there is a growing divide within Iran, with one group advocating for nuclear armament while others continue to favor diplomatic engagement.

Observers believe the debate may also serve as a strategic tool to counter international pressure. In the past, Iran has signaled such possibilities during negotiations to gain leverage, without ultimately taking concrete steps.

Experts note that recent strikes have damaged parts of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, making any rapid development of a nuclear weapon unlikely in the near term. However, the evolving situation is raising concerns that security conditions in the Middle East could become even more volatile.
