U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has claimed that “deep divisions” have emerged within the internal power structure of Iran, suggesting a possible shift in the country’s political dynamics.
Speaking in an interview on ABC News’ Good Morning America on Monday, Rubio said the United States is currently engaged in discussions with a segment of Iran’s leadership that is behaving more “rationally” than before. However, he declined to identify the specific group involved, citing security concerns.
His remarks followed a recent social media post by U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested that Washington is moving toward an understanding with a “new and more rational” leadership in Iran.
Rubio stated that internal power struggles in Iran have created fractures, with some individuals now interested in steering the country in a different direction given the current circumstances. He warned that revealing their identities could expose them to retaliation from more hardline factions within the country.
He further noted that Iranian representatives currently in contact with the United States are sending positive signals privately, which differ significantly from their public statements. However, Washington remains uncertain whether these individuals will ultimately retain power or have sufficient authority to make binding decisions.
The United States is continuing to assess the credibility and effectiveness of these discussions, expressing hope that they could eventually lead to a resolution of long-standing tensions between the two countries.
