A diplomatic dispute has erupted at the United Nations after Iran was elected as a vice-chair of a review conference for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The United States strongly criticized the decision, calling Iran’s appointment a “mockery” of the treaty, which is aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.

Washington argued that Iran has failed to meet its nuclear obligations and has not fully cooperated with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the global watchdog responsible for monitoring nuclear activities.

US officials said these issues make Iran an unsuitable choice for a leadership role in a forum dedicated to nuclear non-proliferation.

Tehran rejected the accusations, dismissing the US criticism as baseless. Iranian representatives argued that the United States lacks the moral authority to comment on compliance with nuclear agreements.

They pointed out that the US remains the only country to have used nuclear weapons in war, referring to the atomic bombings during World War II.

The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between the two countries over nuclear policy and international oversight. Analysts say the dispute could complicate discussions at the NPT review conference, where global powers aim to strengthen commitments to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

Despite the disagreement, the conference is expected to proceed, with member states debating key issues related to nuclear security, compliance, and future arms control measures.
