The United States has temporarily eased restrictions on the sale of Iranian oil and petroleum-related products, citing constructive negotiations currently underway between Washington and Tehran in Switzerland.

The US Treasury Department has issued a 60-day General License valid through August 21, allowing the supply and sale of Iranian crude oil, petrochemicals, and other petroleum products during the specified period.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the decision in a statement, saying the move was part of the positive diplomatic engagement taking place between the two countries in Switzerland.

According to Bessent, Iran has also made several important commitments during the talks. These include ensuring freedom of navigation for all nations through the Strait of Hormuz and allowing inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to enter the country and carry out their monitoring activities.

“The issuance of this temporary license reflects the progress achieved in ongoing discussions and the commitments undertaken by Iran,” Bessent said.

Market analysts say the temporary easing of sanctions could increase global energy supplies, potentially helping to reduce volatility in international oil markets. Additional Iranian exports may provide relief to energy-importing nations facing high fuel costs and supply concerns.

For countries heavily dependent on imported energy, including Bangladesh, the prospect of increased oil availability could help ease pressure on fuel import bills if global prices stabilize.

The license remains temporary and is expected to be reviewed once the 60-day period expires, with future decisions likely to depend on the outcome of ongoing negotiations and Iran's compliance with its commitments regarding maritime security and nuclear inspections.
