U.S. Urges Citizens to Reconsider Travel to the Middle East Amid Rising Regional Tensions

The United States has urged its citizens to carefully reconsider travel to and within the Middle East amid growing fears of renewed conflict across the region. Washington warned that the current security situation could deteriorate rapidly and unexpectedly, potentially leading to flight cancellations, airspace closures, and significant travel disruptions.

In a statement posted on the U.S. State Department's official social media account on Sunday, the department advised Americans currently in the Middle East to exercise maximum caution and remain prepared for possible flight cancellations, airspace restrictions, and other travel-related disruptions.

The statement said that the security environment in the region has become increasingly volatile due to ongoing tensions, with the risk of sudden escalation or the spread of conflict. It also warned that Iran-backed Houthi rebels continue to engage in hostile activities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks targeting civilian airports, raising concerns that the conflict could intensify further. U.S. citizens traveling to or departing from the region were advised to closely monitor updates from airports and airlines.

The State Department also cautioned that U.S. diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, could become potential targets. It warned that Iran and its affiliated groups may also target other U.S. interests overseas, including American businesses and locations associated with U.S. citizens around the world.

The latest advisory comes amid renewed tensions involving Saudi Arabia and reports of fresh Houthi attacks, following a series of security alerts and military incidents across the region. On Saturday, Saudi Arabia said its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis toward the capital, Riyadh.

Officials from the Saudi-led coalition also said several additional attempts to attack civilians and critical infrastructure were thwarted. Meanwhile, the Houthi movement claimed responsibility for missile and drone strikes targeting sensitive sites in Riyadh as well as facilities in Yanbu.

Following reports of explosions and official warnings of a possible aerial threat, smoke was seen near King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. Video footage and images published by Reuters showed thick black smoke rising from an area close to the airport, although the extent of the damage and any casualties was not immediately clear.
