Barrister Abdur Razzak's funeral prayer led by his son held at the Supreme Court

The funeral prayer (janaza) for senior Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Abdur Razzaq was held on Monday morning at the inner garden of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. His eldest son, Barrister Ehsan Abdullah Siddique, led the prayer, while his younger son, Imran Abdullah Siddique, appealed to all attendees for prayers for their late father.

A large gathering of judges, lawyers, politicians, and well-wishers attended the janaza, including justices from both the Appellate and High Court Divisions and leaders from various legal and political organizations.

Attorney General Md.Asaduzzaman, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam, Supreme Court Bar Association President Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Nationalist Lawyers Forum President and Bar Council Vice-Chairman Senior Advocate Zainul Abedin, former Speaker Barrister Zamiruddin Sarker, Nationalist Lawyers Forum Secretary General Barrister Kaiser Kamal, Bangladesh Bar Council Executive Committee Chairman Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kajal, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Advocate Moazzem Hossain Helal, Jamaat's Dhaka Metropolitan South Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul, its Chittagong Metropolitan Ameer Shahjahan Chowdhury, AB Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Manju, a large number of Supreme Court lawyers and family members, and many people from different walks of life took part in the Janaza of Barrister Abdur Razzaq.

Following the prayer, wreaths were placed on Barrister Razzaq’s coffin on behalf of the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Attorney General’s Office in a show of respect and remembrance.

In honor of Barrister Razzaq’s passing, the Supreme Court suspended judicial proceedings for the remainder of the day. According to a notice signed by Acting Registrar General Mohammad Moazzem Hossain, proceedings of the Appellate Division ran until 11:00 AM, and those of the High Court Division until 1:15 PM before adjourning for the day.

Barrister Abdur Razzaq passed away at 4:10 PM on Sunday, May 4, while undergoing treatment at Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhaka. He was 75. He is survived by his wife, two sons, one daughter, and numerous admirers.

Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed expressed deep sorrow over his death, stating in a condolence message that the legal community had lost a brilliant and distinguished jurist. “His passing is an irreparable loss to the nation’s legal fraternity,” the Chief Justice remarked.

Born in 1949 in Shekhlal village of Beanibazar upazila in Sylhet, Barrister Razzaq earned his barrister-at-law qualification from Lincoln’s Inn, London. He returned to Bangladesh in 1986 and quickly rose to prominence in constitutional and criminal law, earning respect both at home and abroad for his legal acumen.
