Following a landslide victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has been officially named the state’s next Chief Minister. The decision was finalized on Friday (May 8) during a meeting of the 207 newly elected MLAs at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Adhikari was chosen unanimously as the legislative party leader, clearing the way for him to lead the first-ever BJP government in the state and marking the end of Mamata Banerjee's 15-year tenure.
The swearing-in ceremony for the new government is scheduled to take place this Saturday at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Ground. Earlier, Governor R.N. Ravi dissolved the existing assembly to facilitate the transition of power. With the BJP securing over 200 seats, the party has achieved a definitive mandate for change. Suvendu Adhikari is expected to meet the Governor shortly to formally stake his claim to form the government, signaling a major political shift in West Bengal.
