Russia is reportedly increasing military support to Iran by offering advanced weapons and sophisticated drone technology capable of challenging United States military operations in the Middle East, according to recent intelligence-based reports.
The claims suggest that Russian military technology has complicated US strategic operations against Iran and strengthened Tehran’s defense capabilities amid rising regional tensions.
According to a report by The Economist, citing a classified document, Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, has proposed supplying Iran with 5,000 fiber-optic drones similar to those currently being used by Russian forces in the war in Ukraine.
The report states that Moscow has also proposed providing Iran with long-range satellite-guided drones and specialized military training for Iranian personnel to operate the systems effectively.
The alleged 10-page proposal reportedly includes maps of several islands and six operational drone diagrams outlining deployment strategies.
Defense experts say fiber-optic drones pose a significant challenge to conventional air defense systems because, unlike standard drones that rely on radio signals, these systems are controlled through thin fiber-optic cables connected directly to operators. As a result, they are difficult to jam electronically and do not emit detectable radio frequencies that could expose operator locations.
The drones are reportedly capable of conducting precision strikes on targets up to 40 kilometers away.
Similar drone systems have recently been seen in the possession of Hezbollah during operations against Israeli forces in Israel and Lebanon. Israeli officials claim the drones originated from Iran’s Revolutionary Guard forces, though reports increasingly suggest Russian involvement in their supply chain.
The document reportedly emerged at a time when speculation was growing that US President Donald Trump could authorize military action targeting Iran’s strategic oil facilities on Kharg Island.
Reports further claim that Russia is preparing to deliver upgraded versions of its domestically produced Shahed drone systems to Tehran. Some of these drones are allegedly equipped with satellite communication technology linked to Starlink, enabling long-range operations and improved battlefield coordination.
Russian intelligence analysts reportedly believe Moscow has become increasingly interested in strengthening Iran militarily against the United States and Israel as geopolitical tensions continue to escalate in the region.
