US President Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, aimed at temporarily halting the ongoing war between the two countries.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said the ceasefire would take effect from May 9 to May 11 and would include a complete suspension of military attacks as well as a major prisoner exchange involving 1,000 prisoners from each side.
“I hope this ceasefire will mark the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard-fought war,” Trump wrote in the post.
Trump noted that the ceasefire period coincides with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations commemorating World War II, while also acknowledging Ukraine’s contribution during the war against Nazi Germany.
Shortly after Trump’s announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the agreement in a post on X, saying the ceasefire was part of ongoing US-led diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, which has continued for more than four years.
Russia also confirmed the agreement. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said the ceasefire deal followed recent telephone discussions between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He added that both leaders had emphasized the historic alliance between the Soviet Union and the United States during World War II and discussed the possibility of a temporary truce during Victory Day commemorations.
The temporary truce is being viewed as a potential step toward broader peace negotiations, although previous ceasefire efforts between Moscow and Kyiv have faced repeated accusations of violations from both sides.
